Do I need an AQA-approved textbook?

No. Approval is useful evidence of specification alignment, but a book still has to suit the job. A strong non-board-specific calculations book can be more valuable than an approved condensed guide.

Can I buy these second-hand?

The full textbook and Jim Clark book are sensible second-hand purchases if the edition and condition are clear. Buy a clean copy of any write-in workbook.

Will these books get me an A or A*?

No resource guarantees a grade. They can improve explanation, practice volume and error correction. Results still depend on what the student does with them and the quality of feedback.
