OCR A-level Chemistry A

Best OCR A Chemistry books

OCR A has an unusually strong main textbook. Add a write-in workbook and a dedicated calculations book, then use the real exam papers once each topic is secure.

A-Level Chemistry: OCR A Year 1 & 2 Exam Practice Workbook

A well-aligned source of frequent topic practice, particularly useful before moving to the harder questions from OCR papers.

Best for
  • Weekly consolidation
  • Students who need more independent question volume
  • Quick diagnosis of weak topics
Watch for
  • Buy an unused copy
  • Do not confuse workbook completion with full exam readiness
  • Keep returning to older topics

Torben's note: This is the sort of book schools often do not provide because students write in it. Use it as the course progresses, not in one heroic weekend before Paper 1.

Best calculations bookUse across two years

Calculations in AS/A Level Chemistry

A durable calculations course with enough worked explanation and repetition to make unfamiliar exam problems less alarming.

Best for
  • Core quantitative chemistry
  • Students at every starting level
  • Practice before mixed OCR questions
Watch for
  • Some old or off-spec material
  • Chapter 9 is unnecessary
  • Past papers remain the final standard

Torben's note: For OCR A, skip chapter 9, weak-base pH on pages 201–205, S-total on pages 262–265 and the old mass spectrometry material on pages 20–21. Most of the book remains extremely useful.

A Level Chemistry for OCR A Student Book

The strongest full-course OCR A reference, with explanations and questions closely shaped around the specification.

Best for
  • Detailed course explanations
  • Specification alignment
  • End-of-chapter work across both years
Watch for
  • The complete book is expensive
  • Check whether school provides a print or digital copy
  • Some answers and supporting material sit online

Torben's note: This is the main OCR A textbook I would want a student to have access to. ISBN 978-0-19-835197-9. If school provision is weak, it is the first substantial purchase.

A Level Chemistry for OCR A Revision Guide

A compact OCR A companion with explanations and substantial question practice.

Best for
  • Weekly review during the course
  • A lighter companion to the main textbook
  • Additional questions in the examiner style
Watch for
  • There are errors in parts of the answer material
  • It should not replace the main textbook
  • Do not save it solely for final revision

Torben's note: This guide earns its place because of the question practice. Use it alongside the main textbook and remain prepared to query an answer when the chemistry says otherwise.

A practical sequence

How to use them during the course

During teaching

Understand

Use the main textbook to resolve difficult explanations and complete selected end-of-chapter work.

After each topic

Practise

Complete the workbook and relevant Jim Clark calculations soon after each topic.

Later retrieval

Mix

Return to older questions and begin full OCR papers. Topic confidence can be misleading when every question arrives under a helpful heading.

Is the Ritchie and Gent textbook worth the price?

Yes when the student lacks reliable access through school. It is comprehensive and closely matched to OCR A. It is poor value as a duplicate of a book already available through the college.

Should I buy the revision guide or the full textbook?

The full textbook is the better explanation source. The revision guide is a useful companion because it adds questions and a more compact review route.

Are there errors in Chemistry books?

Yes. Even good books sometimes contain answer or wording errors. Compare doubtful answers with the specification, reliable chemistry and official mark schemes.
